Topic: The conflict between the Western ideal of freedom of information and the Chinese government’s desire for control, 2010-2020. In 2010, the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists suffered a series of cyber-attacks. Google had to decide whether to stick with its principles of providing free and open access to information to all its users, or company with the Chinese government’s regulations about limiting access on controversial news topics. The core issue is whether there is a way to strike a balance between Western ethical and business ideals and the realities of doing business in the world’s largest country.
